Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro

Thanks to its temperate weather all year round, anytime is a good time to visit Brazil. Of course if you’re planning to see a particular event – like Carnival, which usually takes place in February – you’ll want to plan your trip around that date.

Being south of the equator, Brazil’s seasons are the opposite of ours. School holidays run from December to March, which is also the most popular season for tourism. This means there’s lots to see and do during that time, but some destinations may be crowded; bookings may be a little scarcer and resort prices a little higher during this time. May to September will be less crowded and likely cheaper, with the possible exception of July which is also a school holiday.

In the northeast, temperatures will reach up into the high 30s (°C) in the summer and stay closer to the mid-20s and low 30s at other times of year. The Amazon isn’t as hot, but is quite humid – the rainy season runs December to March. In the south, temperatures are a little more varied, up to the mid-30s in summer and dipping as low as 15° from June to August.

You’ll never be at a loss for something to do in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro offers views of the iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain and sun-drenched Copacabana Beach. Nature lovers can explore the wonder of the Amazon rainforest and feel the spray of the breathtaking Iguassu Falls. And there are plenty of other cities to discover, including the bustling metropolis of Sao Paulo and the magical coastal city of Salvador.

Suger Loaf Mountain, Rio de Janerio

Rio de Janeiro

Known for the renowned Carnival and Christ Redeemer statue, Rio is the destination most people think of immediately when they think of Brazil. Lounge on the world-famous beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana during the day and descend on world-class restaurants and nightclubs in the evenings. Nestled among breathtaking mountains and lush forests, Rio is the starting point for countless adventures.

Sao Paulo

Sao Paulo

With a population of 19 million people, Sao Paulo, or “Sampa,” as it is also known, is the business capital of Brazil and its largest city. It is as much a cultural and entertainment hub as a financial one, offering some of the country’s best museums and galleries, as well a vibrant theatre and opera scene. Its many bistros and restaurants make it a world-famous dining destination. Far from stuffy though, Sampa also features 15,000 bars and clubbing 24/7 – its non-stop energy rivals that of New York or London.

Iguassu Falls

Iguassu Falls

Brazil’s majestic natural wonders offer a stunning contrast to its bustling cities, and the Iguassu (also Iguaçu or Iguazú) Falls are among its most breathtaking attractions. 275 individual falls are spread over a 3 kilometre area near the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, some cascading down from a height of 80 metres or more – higher than Niagara Falls! The moisture from the falls produces incredibly lush vegetation, which together with the rainbows, butterflies and deep red earth creates a natural spectacle that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.

The Amazon

The Amazon Rainforest

The very name Amazon conjures up the wonder and majesty of the tropical rainforest the instant you hear it. The largest rainforest in the world accounts for about 40% of Brazil’s total area, the Amazon forest is a vast and diverse ecosystem, home half a million different species of plants and a fantastic variety of birds, monkeys and other exotic wildlife. A canoe trip through a flooded forest or a leisurely riverboat ride up the mighty Amazon is a must for any aspiring naturalist – while more adventuresome spirits can opt for a night of camping in the forest or even a survival tour.

Salvador

Salvador

The unofficial music capital of Brazil, Salvador is infused with Afro-Brazilian culture, music and cuisine. Captivating and magical, Salvador offers a unique experience to every visitor. Marvel at the colourful houses of the Pelourinho district, many of which date back to the 18th century, and visit a new church every day – there are over 300 in all! Salvador is also home to capoeira, the dramatic and fierce martial art, performed regularly for the delight of the crowds. Add to this the seductive music, 80 kilometres of sandy beaches, and the Carnaval of Salvador da Bahia (which has earned the title of the biggest party on the planet) and it isn’t hard to understand why Salvador is one of Brazil’s most popular tourist destinations.
